The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, PDP, on Wednesday reinstated Samuel Anyanwu, a close ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, as its party’s National Secretary.
Anyanwu’s refusal to vacate the office of his position as the PDP national secretary b has been one of the contentious issues tearing the party spart.
He had left to contest the Imo governorship position, but returned after losing to Governor Hope Uzodinma. The party has not known peace since then.
However, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the party, announced Anyanwu’s reinstatement at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
Damagum, who was flanked by the Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other key stakeholders, said the decision to reinstate Anyanwu, as a member of the National Working Committee, NWC, was difficult.
The party seemed to have little choice in the matter after Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, told the party leaders in a meeting to put their house in order.
Damagun also announced the cancellation of the party’s planned NEC meeting, had been cancelled.
Instead, Damagun said: “We will have an expanded Caucus, at the next Caucus we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC.
“Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary, that is why I said it was a critical decision. Like INEC said they don’t have our notice, so what we will have on June 30 is an extended Caucus.”
Only on Tuesday, the staff of the party had locked Anyanwu out of the National Secretariat and staged a mass walkout in protest against his attempt to forcibly reclaim his position as national secretary.
The protest came after the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, appointed Setonji Koshodeo as acting National Secretary, a decision the staff had pledged to support.
