MWUN joins Nationwide strike

The Maritime Workers Union Union of Nigeria (MWUN) under the leadership of Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, fnli, HFCPSP, has obliged to comply with the directive of both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to join in the indefinite total lock down of the country commencing from Monday, the 3rd of June, 2024.

A release signed by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media, MWUN, said the indefinite nationwide strike has become very imperative, given the failure of the Federal Government on the logjam and the inconclusive national minimum wage negotiation and refusal to reverse the hard biting hike in electricity tariff.

It said, in view of the foregoing, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria has directed its members in all ports nationwide, jetties, terminals, oil & gas platforms to effectively ensure the total compliance of the strke as directed by the NLC and TUC. This is also to serve as notice to all our concerned stakeholders in the Maritime sector.

On Friday the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) declared a nationwide strike beginning from Monday, June 3rd, 2024 over the tripartite committee’s inability to agree on a new minimum wage.

The President of the TUC Festus Osifo announced the strike at a joint news conference with the leadership of the NLC in Abuja on Friday.

According to the labour leaders, the decision follows the expiration of an earlier request to the Federal Government to conclude all negotiations for a new minimum wage before the end of May.

The organised labour had once pulled out of the negotiation and rejected two Federal Government offers, the latest being N60,000.
