Lagos Assembly impeaches Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached its speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Although the details of his impeachment remain sketchy, Obasa has been embattled since December 2024 when a petition was filed by the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, Lagos State
against him with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of financial misconduct, breach of public trust, and abuse of office.

Obasa was accused of using proxy companies to allegedly embezzle funds from the Lagos House of Assembly and violating due process and procurement regulations.

This is apart from a different petition by the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, which previously petitioned the EFCC to investigate allegations of mismanaging N17 billion earmarked for constructing a gate at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, Mojisola Meranda has emerged as the new speaker, following Obasa’s impeachment.
